It’s possible to keep your mobile number when you transfer to a new network operator.
First, you ask your current network operator for a Porting Authorisation Code (PAC). Some networks will charge you a small free. The PAC can sometimes be used when you purchase a new phone/tariff to set up the phone with your number. However, it is more usual (read convenient) for retailers to sell you a phone with a new number and for you to change the number later by giving the PAC to the new network operator. Numbers are usually transferred within 5 to 7 days of the new network operator being notified.
Important things to know…
- You must usually have completed your 12, 18 or 24 month contract before you can port your number.
- Don’t cancel your old contract until the number has been ported. Disconnected numbers cannot be transferred.
